01. Objective

Help the world's largest online publishers reclaim their audiences and data from social networks

In the mid-2010s, digital news publishers outsourced their audience engagement to the comment feeds on social media in a race for views and clicks.

When the industry started shifting towards a subscription model, publishers had to bring the discourse back to their websites to reclaim their audiences and data.

02. Strategy

Design a commenting experience for hundreds of millions of users that is better than social media

To effectively compete with on-site commenting plug-ins like Disqus, Propel partnered up with Viafoura to create a better experience across their suite of audience engagement products.

With over 350 million active users across 600+ media brands, the challenge was to create a design system that would be inviting and simple to encourage casual readers to write their first comment.

A suite of audience engagement and personalization products based on a custom design system

We started with an audit of all user-facing products to identify areas of improvement and create an inventory of reusable components.

The design system allowed us to create a consistent user experience and design new products to expand the offering.

04. Outcomes

The redesigned experience resulted in a 3X increase in subscription ROI

The new audience engagement tools created a lift of activity across all key metrics, like 62% increase in engagement across devices and 20% more time spent on site.

The new design system enabled Viafoura to rapidly roll out new products like Ratings & Reviews, Live blogs, Chat, and an entirely new level of personalization.
